Marwan Hmam is a filmmaker and film editor from Beni Suef, the gateway to Upper Egypt.
He is pursuing a BA in Film Editing at the Higher Institute of Cinema while studying Film Distribution and Programming at the Jesuit Cinema Academy. He previously studied Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College in the United States before continuing his education in Egypt.
Marwan aims to explore his cinematic language by unfolding the distinct geographies he has inhabited across Egypt, highlighting themes of unspoken emotions, memory, place, identity, and human relationships.
Marwan shot his first short, RUSSIA, on Super 8mm film with support from the analog film initiative "Two.Five"— an Egyptian initiative aiming to highlight a new generation of alternative cinematic voices in Egypt—where RUSSIA won the Audience Choice Award.
Alongside his independent filmmaking practice, Marwan works as an editor at WSKRS Studio and collaborates with editors Sara Abdallah and Adham Yehia on independent film projects. Recently, he founded Maydoum Films, an audiovisual production initiative focused on telling Egyptian stories from outside Cairo, the center of the Egyptian film industry.
Writing
